Conference summary

The ASEAN Bioenergy and Bioeconomy Conference 2017: Sustainable management and Partnership was opened by Dr. Prasert Sinsukprasert, Deputy Director-General of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, Ministry of Energy. He welcomed the 114 participants from 9 countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, India, China, France and Switzerland) and delivered the opening remarks on the Future Trend of ASEAN Biomass Energy Development.

The first keynote speaker was Dr. Philippe Girard Regional Director for Continental Southeast Asia, CIRAD, France who presented bioenergy research needs for ASEAN. Mr. Gnhoung Choumnit, Deputy Director Department of Energy, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Cambodia gave the details biomass and biomass utilization in Cambodia where agricultural residues and waste wood are the main source of biomass raw material with huge potential for energy production. Mr. Mathias Burge invited speaker fromSFA Handels GmbH, Business partner of Ferrostaal, Switzerland, made a presentation on waste incineration on water-cooled grate systems. He introduced water-cooled grate systems for energy power plants. The advantage of water-cooled grate is that it needs smaller grate surface and being operate with a lower excess air ratio and lower maintenance cost. Ms. Nannapat Musigamart specialistfromPAPOP Co., Ltd., Thailand presented the process of biogas production from cassava pulp and napier grass. The benefits of cassava pulp and napier grass for biogas production were pointed out together with the case studies of biogas production in Thailand and some ASEAN countries.

The afternoon session consisted of two session of oral presentation, Assoc.Prof.Dr.Songkram Thammincha from Kasetsart University chaired the oral presentation session 1: ASEAN Biomass Sustainable Management. There were 4 speakers. Dr. Atom Sunil Singh from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He presented the impact evaluation of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS) through a Geographical Information System (GIS). The impact of infrastructure system development on natural resources was described using GIS the huge impact on the degradation of environment and was found. Mr. Mahtuf Ikhsan from Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia presented the development of mahogany leaf (Swietenia macrophylla) as source of green battery to help rehabilitation in Bukit Suligi Educational Forest. He conducted the investigation on the used of mahogany leaf extract as an alternative energy source for community and found that a battery could generate 3.86 volts of electricity. Ms. Wannapa Kratay from Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Thailand presented the details of the study on biogas production using water hyacinth from the Chao Phraya river. The study highlighted biogas production from water hyacinth by using anaerobic digestion. The study results indicated that water hycacinth was very good source for methane production. The last speaker of this session was Ms. Pavina Badan from Wood and Paper Industrial Technology Program, Department of Forest Products, Kasetsart University, Thailand who demontrated her work on development of prototype batch reactor for torrefied wood chip production. The research aimed to develop the condition for para rubber wood chip torrefication. It was found that the best condition was 75 %feeding volume and 5 rpm of angular speed.

The oral presentation Session 2 Biomass Innovation, Environmental Friendly Technology for ASEAN Community was chaired byDr. Worrajit Setthapun, Dean of Asian Development College for Community Economy and Technology (adiCET). There were 4 presenter. This session started with the presentation on Bioenergy potential: The pilot case of ethanol production from cassava By Mr. Supalerk Kanasook, National Project Coordinator, UNIDO Regional Office, Thailand. The improvement of fermentation process of bioethanol production from cassava was report. This technology had high productivity and could be transferred to ASEAN countries. Ms. Jatuporn Kongcrup from Department of Forest Products, Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand presented the study on characteristics and papermaking potential of jute fibers produced from soda and refiner mechanical pulping. The results of the study characterized the pulp and paper produced from jute using soda and refinery mechanical pulping (RMP) process. The results also indicated that paper made from RMP had higher bulky and opacity than that made from soda. Ms. Bich-Ngoc Ho from Institute of Energy Science, Vietnam delivered the details of the pre-feasibility study of a co-generation power plant using bagasse in central Vietnam. This pre-feasibility study was analyzed the eco-social status of project location, geographical and topological conditions, adequate technical solution as well as equipment suppliers. Mr. Phongkarn Piamsuttitam from Engineering Solution Provider Co., Ltd presented the 2 decades of biomass power plants in Thailand: A perspective of development. Statistic and stories of the use of agricultural residue for generating electricity from the past decades were presented together with the current supporting, mechanical used and the development plan in Thailand.

                Poster Session consisted of 6 poster displays. The poster presentation was takes place during morning and afternoon coffee break and lunch break when presenters stationed at their poster. Following are the list of poster presentation
